Some people may think the weave pattern of 3k carbon fiber is too small or think it is very common in the market. In order to meet different customers' requirements, there's 12k carbon fiber in the back. In this article, you will know what is the difference between UD, 3K and 12K.
Maybe some guys are curious what is the mean of 3k, 12k, and UD. Firstly, let me explain it.
3K means there are 3,000 filaments per "tow", 12K means there are 12,000 filaments per "tow" and UD means unidirectional (no pattern, black color) and the fibers of UD weave are arranged in one direction. Different weaving ways have different appearances.
In the below picture, you can clearly see UD, 3k, and 12k have different looks. UD only has black color without weave. 12K weave pattern is larger than a 3k weave. it is about 4 times larger. Some customers may also know 1K, 6K, 18K and 24K. They are also decussated/crossed, just in different sizes of patterns. Among, 3K weave carbon fiber is most well known.
If some guys prefer a weave pattern observable from a distance, 12K is a good choice.
Here, i need to make a reminder. If carbon fiber cutting parts have 3k/12k appearance, it not mean the inner also is 3k/12k.
Generally, 3k and 12k are not used alone. Most of the carbon fiber parts mainly use UD carb fiber inside, only the surface will choose 3K, 12K, etc. This is because people choose 3k or 12k, only is for appearance. If they also use 3k or 12k to make carbon fiber shape parts, it is not only expensive but also has no effect on the surface lines.
Under the same size of the carbon fiber plate, you would find UD carbon plate is the lightest. The main reason is 3k/12k weave patterns have overlapping fibers. But we can negligibly consider this because the weight differences between the three are slight - about 10 grams.
Now, i think you may know the difference between UD, 3K, and 12K. Which will you prefer? No matter which one you choose, Dronecarbon will customize it for you.
